Euthyphro
Well look who’s at the courthouse standing in the sun
Tell me Socrates what wicked thing have you done
Socrates
Meletus says I’m ruining the youth of the town
He says I’m inventing deities and tearing them down
But what about you my friend? You’re looking awfully mad
Euthyphro
I’m marching up the steps to put a charge on my dad
He left a worker in a ditch and let the poor fellow die
And prosecuting murder is the law of the sky
It’s the pious thing to do I have the heavens on my side
Socrates
Well since you are an expert let the expert decide
Socrates
Tell me is it holy ’cause it’s loved by the divine
Or do they simply love it ’cause the action is fine
Are you doing what is right because they gave it a nod
Or is the goodness of the action independent of God
Which one is the cause and which one is the state
You gotta pick a horn before we walk through the gate
Euthyphro
Piety is doing what is dear to the lords
Whatever pleases all the gods and strikes the right chords
Socrates
But haven’t you admitted that the heavens will fight
That Hera and that Zeus can never settle what’s right
If the gods are in a quarrel over justice and shame
Then the holy and the wicked are exactly the same
What pleases one immortal makes another one bleed
Euthyphro
Well surely they agree upon a murderous deed
Socrates
But that’s an attribute my friend it isn’t the core
We’re walking in a circle we are back at the door
Euthyphro
Every time I put a definition down on the ground
You make it get up and start walking around
Like the statues of Daedalus they never sit still
Socrates
I’m just following the logic up the side of the hill
If the gods love the holy ’cause it’s holy and true
Then holiness is something that they didn’t imbue
It sits above the heavens and it answers to none
Euthyphro
Look at the time! I really gotta run
Euthyphro
I have an appointment
I’m late for the judge
Socrates
Don’t leave me in the dark
I need a logical nudge
Euthyphro
We’ll talk about it later
Socrates
I was hoping to learn
